in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue
Committee (IRC) responds to serious humanitarian crises around the world
and helps victims to survive and rebuild their lives.
For over
half a century, Tanzania has been a country of asylum, hosting one of
the largest refugee populations in Africa. Currently, the country hosts
approximately 287,903 Burundian and Congolese refugees, many of whom
arrived in 2015 as the crisis in Burundi increased. To date, refugees
continue to co-exist with the host communities in Kigoma region
expressing multiple reasons and needs. Within this context, IRC provides
protection and basic assistance in the areas of Safety (comprises of
Protection and Rule of Law, Women Protection and Empowerment, and Child
Protection), Health (mental health and psychosocial support services and
reproductive health), and Education.
Job Overview:
The
Mentor Nurse will be responsible for providing mentorship and capacity
building to nurses and healthcare providers, particularly in family
planning services. This role is critical in ensuring the delivery of
high-quality family planning services in line with national and
international guidelines.
Major Responsibilities.
- Mentorship
and Capacity Building:Mentor and supervise nurses and healthcare
workers on family planning methods, counseling, and service provision. - Conduct on-site mentoring sessions and supportive supervision in health facilities.
- Facilitate training programs and workshops aimed at improving knowledge and skills in family planning.
- Family
Planning Service Improvement:Assist healthcare workers in delivering
comprehensive family planning services, including long-acting reversible
contraception (LARC) and counseling on various contraceptive options. - Ensure adherence to standard protocols for family planning services and reproductive health.
- Work closely with teams to integrate family planning into other health services (e.g., maternal health, HIV services).
- Monitoring
and Evaluation:Monitor the quality of family planning services provided
by mentees, offering feedback for improvement. - Collect and report data on family planning services to inform program improvements.
- Participate in regular assessments and evaluations to ensure the effectiveness of mentorship activities.
- Collaboration
and Coordination:Work closely with health facility managers, district
health teams, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment with national
reproductive health strategies. - Act as a liaison between
healthcare providers and program management teams, ensuring seamless
communication and implementation of family planning initiatives. - Documentation
and Reporting:Maintain accurate records of mentorship activities,
training sessions, and service delivery improvements. - Provide regular reports on mentorship outcomes and family planning service delivery progress.
Key Working Relationships:
- Position Reports to: Head Nurse.
- Position directly supervises: Healthcare providers under mentorship.
- Other Internal and/or external contacts: Health facility managers, district health teams, community health workers.

Qualifications
- Educational
Requirements: Diploma in Nursing and Registered with the Nursing
Council of Tanganyika with a valid practicing license. - Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in family planning mentorship
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies.
- Proven experience in providing clinical mentorship and training to healthcare workers.
- Strong knowledge of family planning methods and national reproductive health guidelines.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Language/Travel: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Swahili, Kirundi is an added advantage.
Working Environment:
Security level yellow – The situation in most of the country is calm.
Some parts of Kigoma region experience insecurity-highway banditry.
